Hints for Foreign Students

Most of your daily problems can be solved on Boğaziçi University campuses.  The Office of International Programs  will answer your questions, and help you in any way they can.  This office is located on basement floor of the Rectorate Building in the South Campus.

In the case you lost your direction please do not hesitate to ask other students as all of our students speak English.

On South Campus, there is a newsstand which sells  English-language newspapers and magazines.  There are also several cafeterias, restaurants, and coffee shops on and around campus.

Two banks are located on the South Campus: Garanti Bank and Yapı Kredi Bank. They provide all services related to foreign exchange. HSBC, AKbank ATM's are also available.

In the basement of the Men's Dormitory on South Campus, there is a stationery store, where photocopy services are also available. A barber shop is located nearby.

The Boğaziçi University Bookstore, on North Campus, carries a wide range of popular publications and academic books, both in English and Turkish.

The university infirmary is on South Campus. Our doctors have various specializations and most of them speak fluent English. A system of referrals to hospitals and larger clinics exists, for problems that the infirmary cannot handle.

Transportation possibilities are by bus and taxi and metro. The main destinations from the university area are Eminönü, Beşiktaş, and Taksim.

Buses: There are two kinds of buses: 1. Halk otobüsü ("People's bus"): These are generally orange, and the tickets are bought on the bus. 2. Istanbul municipality buses: Fare tickets should be bought in advance. At sizeable bus stops, such as the ones in Bebek and Rumeli Hisarüstü, there are booths that sell bus tickets. From Boğaziçi University, you should take either 559C (via Beşiktaş) or 59R (via Şişli) to go to Taksim. 59Ş goes to Şişli. 43R goes to Eminönü, via Beşiktaş. All buses go through Etiler and Levent.

Taxis: Taxis are plentiful in Istanbul, and are inexpensive by US and European standards. No matter where you happen to get lost, you are likely to find an empty taxi to take you back to familiar surroundings. All taxis use meters: Be sure the driver turns the meter on.

If you choose not to install a telephone line in your room, international phone calls can be made with telephone cards from public phones.  Phone cards ("telefon kart") are available from most convenience stores and newspaper stands.  It is also possible to purchase a cellular phone while in Turkey.  The code for making international phone calls from Turkey is 00, followed by the country code, area code and telephone number.

We hope that you enjoy your stay in Istanbul and on our beautiful Boğaziçi University Campus.
